From this page you can use the applet versions of the client within your browser. There are two distinct versions: for Java1.1 capable bowsers and for Java1.2 browsers. As noted here, the two versions have different requirements that must be met in order to successfully start the applet. Under each link there is information on files that the applet downloads. As you see the Java1.2 version is the preferred one since it has to download single file only.
